Thesis Title: Breaking the Binaries: Rethinking Religion, Gender and Secularism in Modern Britain
Thesis Description:
This project explores the possibilities of a new non-normative and non-binary theoretical model through which to unlock historical debates over secularisation. Drawing upon conceptual frameworks associated with historians of gender, it interrogates existing historiography utilising case studies of two unstudied women’s religious movements in contemporary Britain. In doing so it argues that denaturalising fixed distinctions such as religion/spirituality and religious/secular opens up a richer history of faith.
