Thesis Title: An interdisciplinary dialogue between cinema and its posters: Italy 1945-1979

Thesis Description:

Popular film posters graced city walls but unjustly hid graphic artists central to their success. The research project aims to critically assess the role of artistic creativity in film posters, with an interdisciplinary focus on leading graphic artists of Italian cinema between the 1945 and 1979. It will be crucial verify the close ties between film culture, fine arts and figurative culture of consumerism; assess how industrial needs affect the creative development from an artist's initial draft to an accepted final poster; evaluate the perception by artists and the film industry of external commercial, popularist and socio-political pressures, throughout poster development. Moreover, it will be part of my purposes to exhume from anonymity graphic artists unjustly considered second rate.
